He slumped against a tree, rubbing his eyes tiredly. A moment later however, he stood up and shook it off. Not yet. he wasn't going to succumb to the weariness tugging at him. He knew what would be waiting for him if he closed his eyes for just a moment. What good did the nightmares do him anyway? He was better off just... just staying awake.

His thoughts centered on Akala again, clinging like a drowning man to a piece of driftwood. He took a few staggering steps, then vanished, only to reappear somewhere miles south on the same mountain range. He felt the pull--- not, perhaps, Akala, but certainly something similar.

In truth, he didn't know if he really felt it. This whole lack of sleep thing, his body wasn't built for it. (But then, was it built for the nightmares? Was it?) The inside of his head hadn't been trustworthy in a long time. But this was important, and he had been right about this before. Besides, it was better than doing nothing. Even if he was wrong, at least, if he was trying...

He braced himself and jumped again, and again, and again. He didn't really think about where he was going, aside from a vague directional sense. After about ten jumps though, he staggered a few steps and collapsed forward on the ground, braced on his hands and knees.

His ability didn't give him the same kind of gut-twisting nausea that it seemed to give to everyone else, but that many jumps in rapid succession still got to him. In his case it wasn't so much nausea as just really bad vertigo--- at least, for the moment. He had to let the world stop spinning before he tried again, or else he'd be heaving into a bush like Charlie almost had to.

Through the dizziness, he tried to focus on what he found. Had he found something? He wasn't sure at first, but it was waiting for him when he squinted his eyes and looked back. There. He had tried to go in a perimeter around it, but he hadn't jumped far enough. Each location he had tried had pulled him in roughly the same direction. He could just about triangulate where precisely he had to go, but he didn't know where it was just yet.

So that begged the question: did he take that invitation? He could have gone now. A long time ago he might have been wary of making such a long jump, but he had outgrown that kind of caution. More to the point, there was nothing stopping him from doing it in a series of shorter jumps. The only real issue was whether he was going to go ahead and scout it or wait for Charlie first.

He had to sit down and give this some serious thought. He wasn't used to this whole... people thing. Being taken care of by Akala had been weird enough. Partnering up with Charlie was even more out of the way for him. True enough that it had been his idea, but now that she was on board, he still didn't know what that meant. Was there anything she could do?

He didn't think there were any doors where he was headed. It was all mountains for miles. He doubted she was going to appreciate that news. Should he go ahead and try to build her a door, then?

But Faber also remembered why he had bothered to find her for help in the first place. Whatever this was, if it had detained Akala for this long, there was a real risk that it might be dangerous. What he sensed didn't feel like danger, exactly, but it felt... fuller, somehow more than either Charlie or Akala had been. He didn't like that.

In the end he decided on a compromise. He wasn't going to go yet, but he couldn't sit around doing nothing. So what was he going to do? He was going to stockpile doors.

It was the kind of thing that not even Faber could have imagined himself doing, and that was saying something. But then, he hadn't counted on the specifications of the others' abilities. That was the rub about this lone wolf thing; thinking about other people didn't come naturally, even if he wanted it to. But if Charlie's powers could only work through doors and she didn't like taking his way, Faber figured he might as well start a collection of them to drop off in remote locations. It would save them the trouble of building more.

... That said, finding doors to pilfer was maybe easier said than done. Where would he go? The place where he had found the first one had only had the single salvageable door, and he'd had to look for quite a bit before he found even that much.

He thought of all the abandoned places he knew, but some of those were much too old, decades and decades ago. They wouldn't still be there, or if they were, they would be rotted beyond use. He needed something fresher, more recent, but not recent enough that there was still the risk of occupancy and discovery.

It wouldn't be in the mountains though, that much was for certain. He bounced back to Charlie's city, which had by now become as familiar to him as anywhere in this particular time. That said, however, he hadn't been specific enough. He was half staggering as he came out of the jump, and had to brace himself against a wall again for balance.

That wasn't the problem, however. The problem was that he had no idea where he was. He had hoped to land at a familiar starting point, but instead he found himself on a darkened street, the lamps leering luridly at him, buzzing in their high keening voices. He saw a street sign, lurched towards it, squinted at the print to read the name. It wasn't one he knew.

It was too new, too new by half. It was all occupied suburbs. There were rows and rows of happy little houses, neat fences and dark windows. He would have to jump again.

The morning brought Charlie meandering through the door they had built yesterday, yawning hugely. "Faber?" she said, not even bothering at first to open her eyes. The chill of the mountains hit her like a wall, and she shivered, rubbing at her gummed up eyes.

It was only when she received no answer that she shook off the last of her drowsiness, looking around more warily. "Faber, if this is some kind of joke, it isn't funny. I had to wake up early for this." She was not a morning person by anyone's standards, and the lack of caffeine made her even grumpier.

Still nothing. She paused, frowning, and listening hard for the sound of movement. Nothing. All she got was the sound of the wind howling through the trees, which made her huddle more tightly around herself against its bite.

Okay, Faber was a pain in the ass, but he wasn't this deliberately difficult. No, most of the trouble with Faber was that he---

--- didn't think before he did anything.

"Shit," she muttered under her breath. She hadn't had a good look around as of yet, but all of a sudden she was dead sure he wasn't around here.

Still, she was going to check just in case. She was really, really hoping she was wrong. Not only would it have meant even more trouble than she was already going to have to go through, it would have meant that something had happened that kept him from coming back.

She definitely wasn't thinking about his ominous words about something targeting the people with the shards. Or about that Akala fellow they'd been trying to find in the first place.

"Damnit, Faber! Couldn't you have stayed put for one goddamn night?!" she said as she traipsed through the woods near the door. "Come on, it was fun while it lasted. Don't you want to find your friend?"

Charlie had already noticed a few shadows swooping overhead as they moved through the trees. However, they were indistinct enough that they could have been anything, or possibly even nothing. Charlie was feeling the strangeness around them, the uncertainty of the woods. However, as they moved on, the shadows remained shadows, and eventually seemed to fade, leaving nothing but still darkness behind. Whatever they were looking for, they would not find it this time.
