Package Recovery

Tyrin

Tyrin flew high over the peaks of the Tuun Mountains. Silas required a package to be retrieved from a monk that lived in deep seclusion. Very few know the way to the cliff-side stone hut. There were markers though, very few, and small, but they were there. A tree with colors that defied the season. During the summer it's leaves turn orange, and just before winter a bright green. That was the first marker, and it was there, just over the next peak.

He pushed himself to a higher altitude. He would have a better chance of spotting the tree from higher up. He passed over the mountain and looked down. His eyes scanned the area thoroughly. He couldn't make out the trees location, he didn't see it anywhere. He landed for a moment on the mountain's highest point. Just a few cliffs down he saw the biggest Garudor he had ever seen resting peacefully in it's nest.

Balek

Tyrin boldly flew down and landed next to the Garudor's nest. He knew he couldn't show an ounce of fear to this massive bird, or it would be the end of him. He was sure he could put up a fight, but was unsure of what the outcome would be, better not to test it. The massive avian turned it's head to look at him.

"Why do you disturb Balek?", he spoke with a low gravely voice.

"I am looking for a tree that stands out among the rest. It would be slightly taller than most, and it's leaves are the colors of the sun, orange, yellow, and red.", Tyrin thought it best to be straight forward about it, so as not to waste Balek's time.

"Balek is hungry, and prey does not walk to Balek's belly. Are you not prey?", the question was rhetorical. "If you are not prey, then what use are you to Balek?"

Balek knew what he wanted of him, now he was demanding payment. Tyrin expected this, and had an offer the Garudor couldn't refuse.

"I am Tyrin, and I am not prey, but an equal. I will hunt for you a meal if you can find me the tree I seek. Surely a tree is easier to find than food is to capture." Tyrin suspected the sleepy Garudor would find an easy meal a good trade for a quick flight. With Balek's amazing eyesight, finding the tree should take little effort.

"Balek accepts your trade on one condition. If Balek finds your tree before you find prey, Balek makes you prey."

Tyrin hesitated for a moment, then nodded his head. As he did the Garudor's massive wings stretched out from his sides. With one mighty beat of his wings Balek took flight. Tyrin took flight as well. He had seen a freshly dead goat less than a mile back the way he came. It had fallen in panic as he passed overhead. He hoped the scavengers had not found it yet.

Tyrin returned just moments before Balek. A fat goat carcass lay at his feet. He was lucky, and no scavengers had found it yet. The body was still warm even, and tyren himself was able to get a bite, to make it look like he killed it of course.

"Tyrin is a good hunter.", said Balek "Balek is too, and I have found your tree."

He pointed with one wing to the north west.

"Just around that mountain you will find the tree you seek." With that the Garudor began to eat his meal, and turned his back on Tyrin, no longer wanting to be bothered. Tyrin left with a word of gratitude, and left before Balek decided the goat was not enough.

Tyrin landed at the foot of the massive tree. He couldn't understand how he missed it before. Regardless, he was here. The next marker was not far form here, and a notch on the tree designated it's direction. He followed the path north only a mile and reached a large cairn. The tall stack of stones sat on a bolder, beneath the bolder was the mouth of a narrow cave that sat on a ledge.

He climbed down, around the boulder, and into the narrow cavern. The cave twisted and turned. At some point it met with an underground river. This river was the third mark, which told him he was on the right path. Tyrin waded through cautiously not wanting to be swept away by it's current. He climbed up onto a ledge, and had to crawl through a series of cramped tunnels.

He found his way through, and was greeted with the warmth of the evening sun.  He looked out of the end of the cave, and down into an open and lush valley filled with an untouched forest below. He could see the monks house perched precariously above the valley on the opposite side of where he stood. He flew across the mouth of the valley and landed outside the door of the stone hut.

Vaaltz

The door opened before Tyrin turned to face it. A masked woman stood silently before him. She was dressed in a nearly all white monk's robe. Only a few marks, and a sash of red broke the pure white of her outfit. The mask too had two marks of red above the left eye, a mark of her order. She stepped inside and waved for Tyrin to enter.

The hut was a bit larger on the inside than it appeared on the outside. Carved into the mountainside there was plenty of room for him to move around comfortably. The the monk known as Vaaltz walked silently over to a table at the back of the hut. Tyrin followed, and as he did he noticed that the home had only the barest of essentials. He watched her as she pulled a thin, semi-transparent, purple bolt of thread from a small chest. She gently moved it to another box, and locked it with a small silver key.

She turned to face Tyrin with the box in one hand and the key in another. She stepped forward and placed the ker in the palm of his hand, and the box directly into his sidebag. She gestured to a mat on the floor, and then a bench that had fresh food spread about it. She then bowed slightly to Tyrin, and he bowed in return. Slowly Vaaltz made her way outside and closed the door behind her.

Tyrin, happy to get some food and rest before his flight home, filled his belly and slept peacefully. He returned the day after, to his master, without much difficulty. Once home he shared the story of his journey with his friends, and successfully presented his master with the box of mysterious silk, and it's silver key.
